REFINE will adopt an open innovation model for the public-private sector collaboration. It will build on the experience of the Dutch Polymer Institute that industrial companies currently are more inclined to actively collaborate with knowledge institutes. This includes intensive exchange of academic and industrial researchers and sharing knowledge. Exchange not only based discussions but true multilateral collaboration by organising workshops and (plenary) sessions, review meetings, symposia, involving all researchers. This extends the way research consortia have worked until today. The impact REFINE will have on the industrial partners is not by simply developing products (as that can be done by contract research) but by inspiration and education.
